Understanding my credit report
Your credit report is a detailed record of your financial history. It is created and maintained by South Africa’s credit bureaus, and it plays a big role in how banks, retailers, and other lenders decide whether to approve loans, credit cards, or store accounts.
A credit report shows:
Your personal details (name, ID number, employment history)
All credit agreements (loans, credit cards, store accounts, vehicle finance, etc.)
Your payment history (on-time payments and late payments)
Judgments, defaults, and debt review status
Current balances and credit limits
⚠️ How Negative Data is Recorded
When payments are missed, accounts go into arrears, or legal action is taken, the credit bureau records this as negative data on your credit report. This can include:
Late or missed payments – even one skipped installment can appear.
Defaults – when an account is handed over to collections.
Judgments & listings – if creditors take legal action against you.
Debt review status – showing you are under the protection of the National Credit Act.
Negative listings affect your credit score and make it harder to access new credit. The good news is that once accounts are settled and your clearance certificate is issued (after debt review), these negative marks are updated or removed.
